Drive the Mile Marker with It's Own Pump
Updated December 19, 2008
I'm adding in a hydraulic pump that mounts between the power steering pump and AC compressor. This will serve two purposes. The first is to take the load off of the PS pump and isolate the winch from that system. Secondly, instead of 1.5 gpm of flow, I will have 7 gpm of flow to the winch. The winch will develop full rated capacity with 3-4 wraps still on the drum, and should pull 2-3 times faster. The pump has an electric clutch on it like an AC compressor and will be wired into the electric solenoids on the winch. That way, the only time the pump runs is when I activate the winch. The system will have a separate reservoir (of undetermined location at this point.) and will have a relief valve set to 1500 psi. This valve is adjustable, so at some point I may play with the pressure to see what, if any, improvements can be had there. I will also have to modify the valving on the winch to accomodate the substantial extra flow.
I doubt that this kit would be easy to install on a ABS/TT4 truck. The ABS pump sits in the area that would be shared with this pump. I haven't given up on the idea, just that it won't be an easy install. I believe the engine driven, bolt-on, hydraulic pump kits Muncie Power Products makes for the HUMMER only fit pre-ABS ('92 thru '98).
